Understanding Addiction & How It Affects Everyone



"Compulsive physiological and psychological need for a habit-forming substance." This is the accepted definition of addiction.

Addictions come in all packages, large and small. The human has a pension toward fixating themselves, from a hedonistic point of view, on "feeling better". Feeling better costs them a big price in the long run. More than they realize. Sometimes people pay with the ultimate price, their lives.

Addictions can range from the more simple, such as caffeine and nicotine, to the more severe such as alcohol, drugs and prescription pills. Just look at the current Hollywood celebrities and how they are a virtual showcase of various forms of addiction.

Now there are many other forms of addictions that we just don't ever give much thought or credence to such as: shopaholics, gamblers, on-line sex and pornography. This is the downside of the advent of the internet, unfortunately.

Then there are the people addicted to food, people addicted to compulsive forms of dieting such as anorexia and bulimia. Some people are even addicted to self-inflicted pain, a sort of masochism. There are violent and psychotic people addicted to hurting people and enjoying it, another form of sadistic behavior.

Addictions are everywhere in our society, they reach into all walks of life, all nationalities and all forms of religious belief including the radical beliefs which this type of thinking, can in and of itself, lend to another form of addiction. No one is immune to it.

All addictions begin with a psychological malfunction - some become physiological, as well. Many addicted persons will deny that they even have a problem.

Understanding your inability to be in control is a beginning. Seeking counseling and therapy to correct the abnormal thinking is a step in the right direction. Gaining control over your "habit" is the ultimate challenge and goal to freedom!!
