Possible Reasons You Snore



Snoring cannot only be annoying to your roommate, it may also be dangerous. That's why it's best to find the cause of your snoring so you know how to treat it. There isn't one reason for snoring, and the treatment you choose should be tailored to your individual problems if you actually want it to work. If you have the proper treatment, then you and your spouse can get some needed rest.

Many people snore because they have excess fat deposits in their throat that vibrate when you breathe at night. This can be corrected or lessoned by dropping about 10% of your body weight. However, if you are severely overweight, you'll probably need to lose more.

Another common reason for snoring is that the soft palate is very loose and flexible. When you breathe through your mouth, it vibrates, causing the classic snoring noise.

If you drink alcohol, take sleeping pills, or use any other kind of sedative within a few hours of bedtime, you're probably worsening your snoring. These drugs make your whole body relax, including your neck and throat. If the muscles are relaxed, they're more likely to vibrate when you breathe.

Do you need another reason to quit smoking? Well, your cigarette habit is probably making your snoring worse, especially if you smoke before bed. Smoking causes your throat to swell, increasing snoring. If you can't manage to drop the habit, at least skip the cigarettes or cigars before bedtime.

Another possible cause of snoring is your tongue getting in the way. This is usually caused by sleeping flat on your back. In this position, your tongue slides back into your throat and obstructs your breathing. Try sleeping on your side or stomach for a change.

Part of your problem may be due to allergies and nasal deformities. While they do not usually cause snoring, fixing them may make it go away. Snoring only occurs when you breathe through your mouth. Nasal problems block the passage of air through your nose and encourage mouth breathing. If you fix the problem, you can breathe more easily through your nose and snore less.

While they aren't actually physical causes, there are several risk factors that can increase the chances that you'll snore. These factors include being: middle aged, male, and other hereditary factors (including a flexible soft palate and large adenoids and tonsils).

While most snoring is simply annoying, severe, persistent snoring may a sign of a serious condition known as sleep apnea. This is a disorder where you stop breathing during the night for periods as long as a minute. Your body then realizes it's without air and wakes you up. You usually fall right back to sleep without ever realizing you woke up.

In addition to the dangers of not breathing during sleep, apnea also causes other problems. Because people with sleep apnea wake up constantly, they don't usually get enough of each type of sleep. This can leave them tired, achy, and disoriented throughout the day. If you think you may have sleep apnea, contact your doctor immediately to be tested.
